HISTORY OF THIS CAMARO
This Heartbeat City auction includes one survivor
Fathom Green 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS 396-375hp L-89 Aluminum head car with
26,110 original miles. The original engine, transmission, and rear axle is the
very same that General Motors installed in the car at the Norwood Ohio
factory assembly plant in January of 1969. I have taken the time here to
address as many details about the car as possible. These individual paragraphs
are designed to help you understand each facet of the car.
The 1969 Camaro is one of the most sought after American muscle cars. This
super rare all original Camaro is without doubt one of the most desirable of
all the Camaros built in 1969. Chevrolet produced 311 factory built 396-375hp
L-89 aluminum head 375 horsepower Camaros that year. The Pontiac Firebird, GTO,
or even the TRANS-AM is not as desirable as the 1969 Chevrolet Camaros. I have
many clients with large car collections consisting of the rarest and most
desirable muscle cars such as the Shelby Cobra, Boss Mustang, and
Chrysler's Hemi Cudas and Challengers. One thing all of these
collections have in common is the presence of a 1967, 1968 or 1969 Camaro Z/28,
427 Yenko, COPO or even a ZL-1. One cannot over emphasize the desirability of
the 1969 Camaro.
I found this Camaro in Novi Michigan back in 1994. One of my friends told
me about the car. I waited all week to go view the car. Needless to
say I was stunned at that time to find a car so original. It is not often that
you find a car this rare and this original. I checked every casting number,
casting date, and every last code. The only components I couldn't solve were
the wheels. None of the wheels on the car are dated or coded for this car. I
suspect the original wheels were the XT stamped steel base wheel. I never
thought to ask any of the previous owners about the wheels that would have come
on the car from the factory. In 1994 I wrote to the State of Michigan
department of motor vehicles. At that time, they would furnish you with all the
previous owners, titles, registrations both front and back, and ownership
history. I still have the receipt for all the history and certificates from the
state. Due to the Privacy Act, we no longer are permitted such luxuries.
I will give all the above documentation and related information to the
winning bidder. Due to privacy issues, I cannot provide this information on the
web. I have the letter one of the previous owners wrote to General
Motors Corporation dated 1981. They indicated in the document that the car is a
396-375hp Camaro sold with Aluminum head RPO-L89. There are a
lot of people who can't sleep at night if they don't have that original window
sticker or protect-o-plate. The fact remains, that one must look at any
given car based on its own merit, not the documents exclusively. You
will be hard pressed to find a Camaro as rare and original as this
car. Please study the ultra high definition close up pictures of the
engine, transmission and rear axle build dates. You simply can't fake
those pictures.
Factory Options:
1969 Camaro all original SS 396-375hp, L-89 Aluminum heads, 4 speed Muncie
transmission,4.10 positraction rear end, standard black
interior, fast ratio steering, front & rear spoiler package, heavy
duty 4 core radiator, console with gauges, dash mounted 6000/7000
tachometer, center dash mounted clock, and rally wheels.
Engine: 396-375hp L-89 Aluminum Heads
The engine is the original Chevrolet Camaro is the high
performance 396-375hp L-89 that General Motors installed in the car at the
factory in 1969. The engine runs excellent and was rebuilt back in the early
1980s. I have all receipts showing the work performed. I have the entire
folder including all receipts from the beginning. The original engine pad
stamping T1221JJ and original VIN number 19N575023 is still intact on the side
of the engine block. The very last pictures in this auction show close up views
of the engine VIN and Transmission VIN. This is not a re-stamped or
bogus engine in any way shape or form. Please see the paragraph below for
our letter of authenticity.
Transmission: Muncie M-21
The transmission is the original Muncie that General Motors installed in the
car at the factory in 1969. The build code on the side of the transmission is
P9T28. This indicates the transmission was assembled
on December 28th, 1969. This transmission is too early for the A, B, and C
code designation. You can view close up pictures of these codes at the end of
the pictures in the listing or by clicking my "ME" page
Rear Axle: 4.10 Positraction
The original rear axle is still in the car and
has never been removed to my knowledge. The casting date on the housing is
A-3-9. This means the housing was casted on January 3rd 1969. The assembly date
is BV0108G1 E. The assembly date stamping means the rear axle was assembled on
January 8th 1969 and the BV indicates a 4.10 gear ratio was installed. The G
stands for Gear and Axle Plant. The “E” indicates Eaton for the positraction
unit. Please see pictures for a close up view of the axle production date.
Body & Sheet metal
All body panels are genuine GM original parts. The
floor pan, trunk pan, and rocker panels are all original GM and have not been
replaced or patched. No sheet metal or body panels have ever been removed or
replaced on this car.
Interior: Standard black
The interior is the original standard black and
the seat covers, door panels, carpet and most all trim are original.
The seat foams and seatbacks are original. Please see all pictures of the
interior. The steering wheel in crack free and still retains all of
the original pebble grain on the edge of the wheel. The
carpet was replaced a few years back.
Suspension: Front & Rear
This Camaro still has all of the original front and
rear suspension parts from the sub-frame bushings to the leaf springs. Nothing
has been altered or changed in any way. I ever have the original front spiral
shock absorbers.
I have taken the time to note
each and every component on this ultra rare Camaro. Below is the entire
list of each and every component and their date codes. I think it would be very
difficult to locate such a Camaro in this original condition. If you want to
restore a very rare Camaro, this is the car for you. No more parts searching,
no more struggling to find that last piece.
I listed all the rare Camaro(s)
built in 1969 and added up the production numbers. Here is what I found:
1969
ZL-1 69 produced
1969 JL-8 206 produced
1969 Yenko 201
produced
1969 COPO 500
produced (approximately)
1969 L-89 311 produced
Total cars 1,287 Rare High Performance 1969 Camaro(s )
If you look at the number above and think
about how many cars were wrecked, destroyed, tubbed, or prepared for
racing, you will understand there are very few cars left.
How many of those remaining cars are still in original condition with the
original engine, transmission, rear end and all of their components? My
guess is less than 5%. That’s only 60-65 cars.
I have always gotten the biggest kick out
of attending a national car show whether it’s a Corvette or Camaro show.
You can go and view at least 300 plus cars. Guess what? The most unusual
event occurs. The owners of all 300 or more cars will claim that their
car has not only their original engines but their original transmissions and
rear ends too.
If you wish to see more pictures of this car, you can go to my “ME”
page and click the link.
