1969 ZL-1 Engine Block: This is a mint 1969 vintage block, casting #3946052 featuring the original GM Winters Foundry snowflake. There is no damage, no repairs, not even a helicoil. Here is your chance to own a very rare piece of Chevrolet racing history. I bought this block from a Heartbeat City customer. This is one of the best ZL-1 blocks I have had the pleasure to own. This customer had the block inspected by Brian Thompson of Thompson Automotive in Redford Michigan. Brian has built many ZL1 engines including the "Anniversary 427 #1" that was auctioned off at Barrett Jackson earlier this year. After he bought the block he then shipped it out for a complete inspection. The block was pressure tested and had a couple of leaking plugs repaired. The block was then re-skinned, a process devised to clean and restore the exterior finish of the block back to its original appearance. The total cost for this service was $692.00 plus shipping. I have the receipt and it is included. Just recently the block was taken to Champion Performance in Centerline Michigan. The folks there performed a touch hone, installed the stud kit and measurements. The total cost was $439.00. This receipt is also included. The first step was to install new ARP ZL1 stud kit with the provisions for the windage tray #235-5701. The main caps were torqued to 80 ft. lbs. with Moly. The block was then fuzz honed to clean up the bores. This block is .060 over with all bores measuring 4.312 plus/minus .0005. All lifter bores are .8430 to .8435 and were test fitted with lifters. The cam tunnel diameters are as follows: #1 2.1405, #2 2.1310, #3 2.1210, #4 2.1210 and #5 2.1305. The main tunnel diameters are #1 2.9380, #2 2.9378, #3 2.9378, #4 2.9379 and #5 2.9379. All holes were bottom tapped and the block was cleaned. Only mod we could find was the installation of a steel thrust washer on the front cam journal to prevent gauling of the block. The deck had been previously stamped RS 4.560 on the passenger side. The main caps appear to be original and have casting #964 cast into them on top. This engine deserves to go into an original car or a correct clone/recreation.
ZL-1 Aluminum Cylinder Heads: These heads have been thoroughly inspected and checked. The cylinder head work was performed by Bob Pepsin of Race Research in New Baltimore Michigan. There are a handful of helicoils installed. This is not uncommon for heads such as these. The valve size is 2.19 Intake and 1.88 exhaust. These heads have no welds of repairs in the valve areas. There is minor clean up or gasket porting. The valve springs are stock original GM replacements. Please see the countless photographs of these heads. The casting numbers for both cylinder heads is 3946074.
ZL-1 Intake Manifold: This ZL-1 intake is service dated and features the fully cast #3933198. Some of the ZL-1 intakes were made by GM using the #163 intake. GM would grind the last 3 digits out of the casting number and stamp 198 into then manifold. The difference between the two is the center divider under the carburetor was removed. All original ZL-1 intakes had the #198 casting number embossed or raised out of the intake.
NOS ZL-1 Crankshaft: Many people do not realize GM used two crankshafts for the ZL-1 engines. The early crankshaft shown in pictures features the casting number #3856223. This is a genuine GM crankshaft in the original GM box. The original GM part number is 3967811. The other number GM used, which is more common is the #7115 crankshaft. This is more common and typically was used late in 1969 and for service. This makes no difference as the crankshafts are the same for all intents and purposes. This crankshaft is factory 5140 steel tuftrided and cross drilled heavy duty crankshaft. This is the strongest crankshaft produced from the finest materials in the day. I’ve personally seen crankshafts like this sell on eBay for over 2500.00.
NOS ZL-1 Camshaft & Lifters: The camshaft and these valve lifters are brand new NOS original Genuine GM parts. The camshaft is part #3959180. The piddle valve lifters are GM part number #5232695. The camshaft is still lying in the original camshaft tube from GM and to this day remains unopened. The valve lifters (16) are still resting in their original boxes. These lifters were used on Special high performance factory applications such as the 1967-1968-1969 302 Z/28 engines and the 1969 427 ZL-1 Camaro & 1967-1968-1969 427 L-88 Corvette. Note: This is the highest lift camshaft (580) to ever be installed in any vehicle GM sold to the public.
NOS ZL-1 Connecting Rods: The almighty 7/16 full floating connecting rods with the Boron bolts. This is the strongest connecting rod of it’s time. These rods are full floating featuring heavy duty beam and tin plating at the piston pin for superior strength and durability. A new set of these rods would easily of set you back over 2000.00 3 years ago when General Motors pulled the plug on them.
NOS Push Rods & Rocker Arms: These are the 7/16 intake and exhaust push rods. The original GM part numbers for the intake push rods GM # 3969815 and the exhaust is 3946077. The rockers arms are the GM service replacements GM #12368082 which replaced the first GM #3959182. The rocker arm balls and locking nuts are also included in the 12368082 as a kit.
NOS List #4296 ZL-1 Carburetor: This carburetor is still parked in the 1971 dated Holley box. This is an 850 dual feed double pumper. Take note of the detail of the different parts and springs on the carburetor. The float bowl screws and ink stampings are one of the best I’ve had the pleasure to own. The original GM part #3955205. This is one fantastic period correct piece.
Transistor Ignition System: All parts are shown in the pictures of this auction. You will received a completely restored 1111927 distributor dated 8L29. This is 100% correct and ready to install. Also included is a Delco Remy Copper terminal distributor cap, NOS GM# 1115343 TI ignition box with new mounting bracket and hardware. You will also receive the NOS Delco #1115207 ignition coil and NOS GM # 6297688 TI harness. I’ve included a picture of the receipt for the ignition coil and TI amp box. I did not photograph the instructions for the TI system, but the winning bidder will receive a copy of the original GM printed instructions.
NOS GM Water Pump: Original GM water pump with casting number 3931065 dated K-26-8. This is a brand new NOS unit. Please see photographs for more information.
NOS parts and pieces: This auction includes the NOS fan clutch, Oil Filter in the original Ancient AC Delco box. NOS R43XLS spark plugs GM part# 6424251, these spark plugs feature the original 4 green stripes.
Engine parts and pieces: You will receive the original GM used 3947772 Clutch fan blade with a date code of D-69 (April). This is an original GM part. Please see the photographs for all small parts and related pieces to install this engine in a 1969 Camaro. You also will receive an original timing cover for the 8 inch balancer. This is a genuine used GM part.
Engine Pulleys and Brackets: The original lower pulley and upper pulley are included.
These are high performance factory used pulleys with no damage. The alternator brackets are genuine used original 1969 vintage brackets. Mounting hardware is included for all parts mentions above.
Original GM Re-Chromed Valve Covers: Original 1969 Camaro high performance dripper valve covers with show chrome. See photographs for more detail.
I paid over 450.00 to re-chrome these factory covers.
History of the 1969 ZL-1 427
Camaro
(This story is from the Edward Cunneen ZL-1 COPO Connection Book copyright 1994)
It was just before midnight on December 31, 1968. The Fred Gibb Dealership had been closed for hours when a transporter pulled into the lot. Earlier in the day, Fred Gibb had been informed that the first two 1969 Camaro ZL-1 cars had left Norwood Ohio Assembly Plant and were en route to Gibb Chevrolet, so Fred remained at his dealership to witness the arrival of his long awaited shipment.
Two Dusk blue 1969 ZL-1 Camaros, covered with snow, proceeded slowly past the display room window and into Mr. Gibb’s view. Pete Estes has promised delivery of these two cars by yearend, after numerous delays put production months behind schedule.
On the last day of the year, the driver had been instructed that his delivery was to be non-stop, priority run straight to the Gibb Dealership in order to meet this deadline. History was made that cold night, as the first production ZL-1 Camaros were finally released into the hands of the public, an apex of Chevrolet Performance which is still unparalleled after 25 years.
After the first two ZL-1 Camaros were received, the remaining 48 1969 ZL-1 Camaros filtered in from February to the end of March, 1969. By that time, Gibb knew he would never be able to sell these cars at the incredible price of $7,200.00 set by Chevrolet and was allowed to send most of them back to Norwood, Ohio Assembly Plant.
Gibb received car #1-#52 excluding car #3 and #51. Gibb ended up selling 8 cars to racers, and transferred 5 more cars to other Chevrolet Dealerships for use in racing programs. The very last ZL-1 sold by Gibb was a Hugger Orange 4-speed in 1973, and a repossession from a previous year sale.
For 13 years, Fred Gibb believed he was the sole dealer of 1969 ZL-1 Camaros. However, we are very fortunate that NHRA rules required evidence showing where each 1969 ZL-1 was sold and also Vince Piggins kept this list for many years. The list showed the additional 19 ZL-1 Camaros being produced, and unlike Gibb’s cars, several cars had numerous options.
The ZL-1 Camaro world would not be the same, if it were not for Mr. Edward Cunneen and his extensive research into the now famous American Muscle Car.
I have personally owned and restored several real 1969 ZL-1
Camaros. I’ve included some pictures of the 40Th 1969 ZL-1 Camaro in the
auction photos. The 40th ZL-1 Camaro is a Gibb Chevrolet car and it is a Fathom
Green 4 speed M-21 4.10 gear car. No options. All of these pictures are for
your reference only and the car is not included in this auction. I have also
included some pictures of my replica of the 68th 1969 ZL-1 Camaro. This 68th
ZL-1 Camaro is a Silver Rally Sport 4-speed M-22 car with 4.10 gears.
Thank you for your interest.
